In 1962 American Stores Inc. acquired the former site of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Station in Jim Thorpe. They built and opened in January of 1963 a state of the art supermarket known as the Acme.American Stores Inc, under the name of Acme Markets, operated the store for thirty-two years until January of 1995 when they sold to the Penn Traffic Company. Penn Traffic operated the store as an Insalaco’s and Bi-Lo Market for almost three years until December 18, 1998 when the property was sold to Associated Wholesalers Inc. This left the town of Jim Thorpe without a major food store until it was purchased and reopened by a resident.
